Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Which material is better for holsters, Leather or Kydex?.
A: This really is a personal preference. Each type has its own advantages
and disadvantages.
Leather is more pleasing to the eye and a more traditional look. It can be easier on the finish so long as you keep it clean. Leather will pick up dust and
dirt from moisture which can scratch the finish. In humid conditions, it will loose its shape over time
and can cause a "sloppy" fit. Because it is a natural product, it takes care and upkeep to extend it's
useful life.
Kydex, on the other hand, has a more utilitarian look. it won't loose its shape and can be adjusted
to perfect fit. Upkeep is nothing more than a rinsing off.
Q: What is Kydex?
A: Kydex is an extremely durable PVC/Acrylic combination. Kydex is available in a wide range of thickness,
patterns, colors, and textures. This material has very good impact resistance. Kydex also very scratch
resistant. Kydex is also more resistant to a wide range of chemicals than any other holster medium.
Some benefits of Kydex are that it does not retain moisture, and will not lose shape over time. Kydex also
does not allow dirt & grit to embed into the surface which can cause accelerated wear of gun finish; if it
does get dirty is is washable.
Q: What is a cant?
A: Some holster makers offer holster with a choice of "Cant". Cant is the angle the gun leans
forward in the holster. Cant options include adjustable holsters which allow you to adjust your
cant to your desired angle without buying a new holster; holsters with a preset cant cannot be
changed, this includes most leather holsters.
The cant can vary on different model from -5° to 20°. Most common cants are 0° with is referred to as
a straight drop; and 15° which is referred to as FBI cant.
